We now have a Message Board!
Message from the President
"New" News Briefs -
There is some very exciting news to report in the area of reimbursement! Finally, after several years, our efforts have paid off! The Pulmonary and Cardiac Act was passed by Congress. The Act is section 144 of Medicare bill HR6331. This bill, which is now law, establishes both cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services as specific Medicare benefit categories that mandate coverage and payment of services. Congratulations to all of you who supported the efforts by contacting your legislators and had your patients do the same! While this is an important milestone, there is still much work to be done. For example, the law doesn’t take effect until 1/01/10 and even though it is now law, there currently is no National Coverage Determination (NCD) for Pulmonary Rehab.
I now would like to take a short time to promote and congratulate AACVPR. If you have ever wondered over the years why you should be a member of AAVCPR, I hope now you understand the answer. This legislation would not have passed if not for the efforts of AACVPR, American Thoracic Society (ATS), and other organizations. Your membership dues help pay for the lobbyists that these organizations support. In addition, AACVPR organized and supported Day on the Hill (DOTH) for the last few years. If you are not familiar with DOTH, it involves individuals from each state going to Washington D.C. and making individual appointment with their representatives and senators. Please strongly consider supporting your national association by becoming a member of AACVPR and attending the national conference in Indianapolis.
The ASCVPR has our next meetings dates arranged. Please join us July 26th in Prescott, October 22nd at Banner Baywood Hospital, January 22nd at the Mayo Clinic and next April 24th & 25th at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea for our annual meeting. We have exciting programs lined up for the quarterly meetings. Please feel free to contact me or anyone else on the board if you have any suggestions for speakers and/or topics for the annual meeting.
There are lots of exciting things happening in our state. We continue to have more and more programs in the state applying for program certification. We will continue to give you updates on the status of those programs. Many of you heard Mike McNamara speak about the Montana Outcomes project and have decided to join; we will also keep you updated on the results as they become available.
I want to thank all of the board members and committee members for all of their hard work. Our organization wouldn’t survive without your dedication to the field. With that I would like to issue a challenge for those of you who are not on the board or on a committee. You have a tremendous opportunity to contribute to your field and for your own professional development. Of course, there is some extra work involved; however, the benefits far exceed the extra work required. Please contact me if you are interested in serving your organization.
I will finish by saying that these are exciting times in the field of Cardiac Rehab, Pulmonary Rehab, Prevention, and Disease Management. I welcome the opportunity to once again be your President. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions. I am happy to help in any way that I can. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and successful year!
Time is of the essence!
